Question for Tim Denevi
Most of your book is based on the studies of psychology. However, some people disagree with many aspects of psychology (claiming that it is not a "real" science) and disregard the studies of many mental disorders such as ADHD, depression, etc. as well. What is your response to this?

Hi Sylvia,
I'm a scientific method person, myself; often the disregard of entire disciplines is a refutation of the scientific method itself, upon which much of our modern society, in good and bad ways, has become fixed. Many studies are flawed formally, or influenced by drug-company money and as such compromised in what they're willing to articulate. But if these studies follow a rigorous scientific framework--the way in which studies about Ganymede's regolith or the Earth's heat budget are expected to be conducted, even though we can't know for sure the answers--then I'm more inclined to listen. And if psychology itself is no longer part of the discussion--if motivations are given a religious basis, in the way Scientologists do--then there's not much room left for a dialogue. In other words, if someone doesn't believe in the theory of evolution, and I'm writing about the threat climate change presents to species within the environment they evolved to live, then there's not much left for us to talk about...
